Choosing a wedding photographer in Paris: Why should you ask to see their full portfolio?
When you start looking for a wedding photographer in Paris, you’re quickly faced with dozens of websites, well-curated portfolios, meticulously maintained Instagram accounts, and images that make you dream.
But how can you be sure that the photographer’s style is really a good fit for you? And more importantly, how can you know what you’ll end up with once the wedding is over?
The best way to find out is simple: ask to see one or more complete galleries.
Why ask to see the entire gallery?
1. To assess the consistency and overall quality of the report
An Instagram feed or portfolio page usually features a selection of stunning photos. That’s to be expected—it’s designed to make you want to see more. But a wedding photo essay is so much more than just 10 or 15 standout images.
Viewing a complete photo gallery means seeing how the photographer captures a day from start to finish:
How he adjusts the lighting depending on the time of day
How he captures intense emotions and more peaceful moments
Whether he takes a linear or more artistic approach
How much attention he pays to details, people, and places
In short, this is where you’ll see whether the work is consistent, fluid, and sincere, or whether the best images in the portfolio are just the exception.
2. To understand how the photographer works
We all have very different ways of working. Some photographers focus almost exclusively on the bride and groom. Others pay close attention to the atmosphere, the guests, the children running around, and the little gestures.
When you look at the entire gallery, you'll quickly see:
What your photographer is sensitive to
What he chooses to highlight or share
How it covers the different times of the day
And you can ask yourself the only question that matters: Does that look speak to me?
Why do some photographers refuse to show their entire portfolios?
There are two valid (and human) reasons:
1. The photographer is just starting out and doesn't have enough galleries to show yet
It’s possible that the previous couple declined to share their photos for personal reasons, or that they haven’t taken enough photos yet. In that case, it’s completely understandable, as long as it’s explained honestly.
2. The photographer has refined his editing techniques and approach
Showing older galleries could be confusing if the style has changed completely. Again, as long as it’s explained clearly, that’s a valid answer.
On the other hand, any response such as:
“Trust me, I’ve picked out the best photos.”
“You don’t need to see any more—just take a look at my feed.”
… is a warning. Because what you’re looking for isn’t a showcase. It’s your memories.
“Choosing a wedding photographer in Paris also means knowing how to ask the right questions”
A good wedding photographer isn’t just someone who takes beautiful photos. It’s someone who understands you, who knows how to adapt, and who knows how to be present without being intrusive. Above all, it’s someone who can accurately capture the story of your entire day.
So if you’re in the process of choosing your wedding photographer in Paris, don’t hesitate to ask them to show you a complete portfolio—or even two. This will put your mind at ease, give you a better sense of their artistic vision, and provide you with a concrete idea of the photo collection you’ll receive after the wedding.
