Capturing the magic of the holidays without posing
My natural approach to creating authentic Christmas memories
The Christmas holidays are a time for sharing, togetherness, and emotion. It’s a season when families come together, creating memories that will stay with them forever. However, beyond the forced smiles and staged poses, there is a simple beauty to be captured: that of moments caught on the fly, when emotions flow naturally. My photographic approach to Christmas focuses on spontaneity and authenticity. I prefer to observe and capture these moments, without staging, to create memories that reflect who your family truly is. Every burst of laughter, every knowing glance, every tender gesture tells a unique story.
Capture moments without posing
Shooting candid photos allows me to capture genuine moments. Instead of asking people to smile or pose a certain way, I prefer to let things happen naturally. For example, when you’re sharing a meal or exchanging gifts, I aim to capture those interactions as they unfold. This results in photos that tell a story, where every emotion comes across authentically. The focused expressions as gifts are opened, the spontaneous laughter around the table—these are the moments that make the holidays special and deserve to be captured.
Family traditions vary from person to person
Christmas is also a time for family traditions. Whether it’s decorating the tree, baking cookies, or hanging garlands, every family has its own little rituals. These traditions, as simple as they may seem, are rich in emotion and memories. By capturing these moments, I strive to highlight what makes each family unique. Preparing meals together as a family, lively conversations around the table, or the glances exchanged while the children play—these are all precious moments I love to capture. It is these traditions that, year after year, weave the fabric of memories and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Capturing the children’s excitement
For children, Christmas is a magical time, full of anticipation and excitement. Their eyes sparkling at the sight of presents, their infectious laughter, and their eagerness are the essential elements I strive to capture. Rather than forcing them to pose, I prefer to let them play, run, and enjoy the moment as they see fit. This creates lively images, filled with the energy unique to childhood. These moments of spontaneity—like when they’re unwrapping a gift or marveling at the decorations—are often the most beautiful to photograph.
The pretty winter lights
Light is a central element in photography, and Christmas offers plenty of opportunities to play with it. String lights, the glow of candles, or the soft morning light all create unique atmospheres. I prefer natural light or soft lighting to capture warm, authentic images. The lights on the Christmas tree, for example, can create a cozy atmosphere, perfect for capturing sweet, charming family memories. I like to make sure that the light, even indoors, reflects the intimacy and warmth that are so characteristic of this time of year.
The little details of your home
The little details of Christmas—like hands baking cookies, stockings hanging by the fireplace, or tree ornaments—also tell a story. These details contribute to the overall festive atmosphere and create visual memories that are just as precious as the big moments. As a photographer, I love capturing these small scenes that, though subtle, are rich in emotion. They complete the story of your Christmas, adding personal touches that make the photos even more special.
Staying true to real life
It’s important to me that my photos reflect life as it is. Nothing is posed, nothing is forced. I prefer to capture natural moments, even those that might seem imperfect. Children running all over the place, the dog joining the party, or even moments of exhaustion after a long day of celebration… all of this is part of the story. It is these imperfections that make memories real and touching. What matters is the authenticity of every moment captured.
Lasting memories
The Christmas photos I capture aren’t just for today—they’re for tomorrow and the day after. They tell the story of your family at this very moment. These are memories you’ll be able to share with your children and grandchildren—moments of life that you’ll look back on with fondness for years to come. By capturing natural, spontaneous moments, I ensure that these memories will stay with you for a long time and remain faithful records of your holiday celebrations.
Preparing for the photo shoot
To ensure everything flows smoothly and naturally, it’s a good idea to plan a few activities in advance. Decorating the tree together, baking cookies, or simply settling in comfortably to read a story to your children can create moments rich with emotion—perfect for capturing on camera. This helps foster natural interactions among family members, and I’ll be able to capture them without interrupting the flow of your day. By focusing on these activities, you’ll quickly forget about the camera, and it’s during these relaxed moments that I’ll be able to capture the most beautiful images.
Let yourself go, enjoy
On the day of the shoot, it’s important to just let yourself go. Don’t worry about the details or perfection. Live in the moment with your loved ones and let me take care of the rest. It’s the simple, unstaged moments that create the most beautiful memories. Bursts of laughter, tender gestures—all of this happens naturally when you let yourself be carried away by the moment. My role is to capture that magic, without interfering, so that your memories are as true to life as possible.
