How to fill a lull at your wedding
At a wedding, it’s common to encounter lulls—moments when guests might feel at a loss. Setbacks can happen quickly, but they shouldn’t be a source of stress for you. Not long ago, I was photographing a wedding in Paris where an electrical issue prevented the kitchen from running the oven at full capacity. As a result, the meal was delayed by 35 minutes. To avoid these awkward moments and maintain a festive and engaging atmosphere, it’s essential to plan activities or performances that will capture the guests’ attention and entertain them. These moments can not only add magic to the day but also create lasting memories forthe bride and groom and their guests.
Here are a few ideas to fill those lulls during your wedding, each designed to address a specific need and laid out in a table for easy planning, including ideas you can pull off at the last minute in case of any unexpected issues.
A few ideas to use at your wedding
Married Couples Game
Ask couples who have been married for more than a year to stand up, then gradually increase the duration of married by asking those who no longer qualify to sit down. The last couple standing offers a series of tips to the newlyweds. Come up with some funny questions to ask the last couple standing.
12-Month Game
Set up 12 chairs in a circle in the middle of the room and select 13 participants. You’ll ask each participant to come up with a unique anecdote about a couple based on a specific theme (otherwise it’s too easy), such as travel or food. Once they’ve come up with an anecdote, the participant must run and take a seat. The last participant without a chair loses, and the others must share their stories. You can do the same thing with an object instead of stories.
Quiz About the Bride and Groom
Prepare 10 quiz-style questions just in case. It’s a very easy game to set up and is perfect for filling a lull.
Impromptu karaoke
Feeling a bit stuck for ideas? Need some entertainment? Ask the DJ to throw together an impromptu karaoke session with a song everyone knows. You could also ask them to host a music quiz with a theme, such as the year the bride and groom met or the years they were born.
Impromptu Dance Contest
A great way to liven up a lull in the evening is to organize an impromptu dance contest at your wedding in Paris. Ask the DJ to play some upbeat songs, pick 5 couples at random from the crowd, and organize a spontaneous dance contest.
By incorporating these ideas, you can turn those awkward moments—such as a delay in meal preparation or poor management of the cocktail hour—into opportunities. These wedding activities are a great way to bring people together and liven up the event, helping to make this special day an unforgettable experience for everyone.
