Why choose a photojournalistic style for your family photos?
When it comes to capturing family memories, there are several photography styles to choose from. Some prefer studio sessions for their controlled and polished look, while others opt for a lifestyle style that blends guided poses with spontaneity. But there’s another approach—one that’s more immersive and authentic: documentary photography. This is the approach I favor to capture your everyday life as sincerely as possible.
Different Styles of Family Photography
The studio: Ideal for those looking for polished, minimalist images, the studio allows for complete control over lighting and the environment. However, it can lack spontaneity and authenticity.
Lifestyle: This style is similar to candid photography, but typically includes directed poses. The family interacts naturally, but under the photographer’s guidance.
Documentary Photography: Here, there are no posed shots, no interruptions to adjust your posture. The photographer blends into your daily life and captures real moments in your natural environment, with your routines and spontaneous interactions. It took me a long time to realize that even though it isn’t the trendiest style of photography, documentary photography was my way of expressing myself. That I couldn’t tell your story any other way than through this style.
Why choose a photojournalistic style for your family photos?
Choosing a documentary-style approach means opting for authenticity and spontaneity. Unlike studio or lifestyle sessions, documentary photography doesn’t aim to direct or freeze moments in time. It captures life as it is, with its unexpected twists, bursts of laughter, and even moments of calm. This style yields images rich in emotion and naturalness—images that truly reflect who you are.
Family photography highlights the genuine connections and interactions within your home. It’s not just about capturing a smile, but about telling a story through vivid, timeless images. Each photo becomes a window into your memories, capturing the unique dynamics of your family.
A natural, stress-free approach: You don’t need to plan poses or stage perfect moments. Everything happens naturally, as you go about your daily life as a family. This results in authentic photos where everyone feels at ease and emotions flow freely.
Authentic memories: Unlike posed portraits, photojournalism captures the reality of your everyday life. Each photo reveals a glimpse into your family life—with its tender moments, spontaneous moments, and even those little imperfections that make it so beautiful.
Respecting everyone’s pace: During a photojournalistic session, there are no strict schedules or posed poses. I adapt to the energy of the moment, whether it’s an outburst of laughter, a tender moment, or a much-needed break. Every interaction has its place and helps enrich the visual story of your family.
A glimpse into your world: Every family has its own dynamics and traditions. By choosing a documentary-style approach, you’ll get photos that reflect your everyday life: the little morning rituals, the spontaneous hugs, the bursts of laughter at the dinner table… These everyday moments become priceless when captured with sincerity.
What happens during a photojournalism shoot?
A low-key experience: I’ll come to your home or a place that’s special to you, and I’ll be as unobtrusive as possible. Sometimes, however, you might need me to talk so you can feel at ease. So I set down my camera, get to know your children, have some tea or coffee, and invite you to put on some music. You can’t pretend to be yourself in front of a stranger, and I often need to talk a lot so that the silences suddenly don’t feel awkward anymore.
No staging: I capture what happens naturally, whether you’re playing, cooking, reading a story, or simply spending time together. Of course, we’ll do a little prep beforehand—I’ll ask you what you’d definitely like to have photographed, and I can suggest some ideas for things to do. The goal is to take photos that truly reflect who you are, whether you decide to host a sushi workshop or put together a puzzle together
Spontaneous, lively photos: At the end of the session, you’ll receive a collection of photos that capture your true essence, reflecting the authenticity of your everyday life.
The report: a gift for today and tomorrow
Choosing a photojournalistic style for your family photos means choosing memories that truly capture your reality—memories you’ll enjoy revisiting for years to come. These images, imbued with authenticity and emotion, will become priceless over time.
