Preparing for a family photo shoot: my 5 key tips.

Preparing for a family photo shoot in a documentary style requires specific planning to capture authentic and spontaneous moments. As you know, I don’t like to have families pose. For me, the ideaof a family photo album is that it reflects your everyday life. I believe that the objects that have been with you since childhood hold great sentimental power, and I want to make sure they have a place in your family memories. That’s why I prefer a documentary style over a lifestyle approach for family photos. A documentary shoot can, however, be a little intimidating. You often ask me if you’ll be comfortable enough to let your guard down in front of me. It’s obviously my job to make sure everything goes smoothly on the day of your family photoshoot , but there are a few small things you can prepare in advance.

Here are five essential tips to help you prepare effectively:

Stand out

1. Identify your favorite family activities

Think about the activities you enjoy doing as a family. Whether it’s cooking together, playing board games, reading stories, or gardening, these moments reflect your daily life. They allow the photographer to capture genuine, natural moments. A photo session goes by very quickly, so feel free to get everything ready before I arrive. Preparing for the session is also a great way to spend some quality time as a family. Sit down together and ask your children what kind of family photos. You might be surprised by their answers, and they might give you some great ideas for family photos.

2. Prepare the children for the session

A few days before the session, talk to your children to help them get used to the idea of having family photos taken. Explain to them that the photographer will come to spend time with you to capture your family moments. This preparation will help them feel comfortable and involved. Tell them that you won’t force them to smile or pose. Let them know they can be themselves and tell the photographer if something makes them uncomfortable. If they see that you’re relaxed and looking forward to this family moment, they’ll be happy to be there.

3. Choose comfortable, coordinated outfits

I’m almost always asked how to dress for a family photo shoot. Choose clothes that make you feel good and reflect your personal style. Opt for harmonious colors without having everyone in the family wear exactly the same thing. The goal is to feel comfortable while still looking presentable. Wear clothes that you’ll enjoy looking back on in 10 years. Buying a new outfit is fine for nice photos, but wearing something you wear every day—and that your children will recognize later—is even better.

4. Incorporate meaningful objects or activities

Including items that hold special meaning for your family will enrich your family photos. Whether it’s a favorite board game, a musical instrument, a gift that touched your heart, or a family recipe, these personal touches will add depth to your family photos.

5. Be yourselves and enjoy the moment

The essence of a candid photo session is to capture the reality of your everyday life. Don’t try to pose or create artificial situations. Just relax, interact naturally, and forget the photographer is there. That’s how the photos will truly reflect the spirit of your family.
