How to Handle a Rainy Wedding in Paris: Tips from Your Wedding Photographer

7 Essentials for Dealing with Rain on Your Wedding Day:

One of the most stressful things about planning a wedding is not being able to predict certain details, like what the weather will be like. So, obviously, you’d avoid choosing a short-sleeved dress for a wedding in Paris in the middle of December. However, we’re never completely safe from rainy weather or a scorching heat wave. As a wedding photographer, I’ve decided to share a few tips to help you prepare as best as possible and overcome any obstacles.

When planning a wedding, whether in Paris or elsewhere, there are a few mistakes you can avoid: Not having a backup plan, ignoring the weather forecast, and not having an alternative venue for the wedding ceremony or the couple’s photo shoot.

However, it is possible to avoid quite a few minor inconveniences by having an effective backup plan, alternative photo options, a positive experience even in the rain, and the right accessories… These small details will help make your wedding an unforgettable day.

1 - Choosing a suitable backup venue for your wedding:

  • When choosing a wedding venue wedding, we often focus on the beauty of the location, the number of guests, and practical considerations. We look for the perfect spot to host the ceremony, the reception, and/or the meal… But we often forget to ask if there’s a backup plan in case of bad weather. I remember a wedding at a perfect seaside venue, but there was no covered area in case of rain. It rained that day—a rare occurrence in the region where the wedding took place—and the guests got soaked. The most frustrating part of this story isn’t the guests—it mostly made them laugh, and in the end it didn’t rain that much—but it caused a lot of stress for the bride and groom, who had a hard time getting into the spirit of their wedding.

  • You can also choose an indoor venue for your wedding day so you don’t have to move all your setup at the last minute. Choosing an indoor venue for your wedding often stems from concerns about an unsuitable space, a lackluster atmosphere, or a lack of comfort for guests. In reality, there are many incredible and very photogenic indoor venues. It’s sometimes better to take a little extra time when searching for a venue to avoid major stress on your wedding day.

2 - Appropriate attire:

  • You don’t need to wear a raincoat and rain boots to your wedding if you’re worried about rain, but it’s still a good idea to pack a few accessories that will help you feel comfortable on the big day. As a wedding photographer in Paris, I can tell you that we often see a few raindrops threatening the bride and groom’s hairstyles. I love it when the bride and groom have planned for cute accessories that will help them feel comfortable and look absolutely stunning in the photos. Planning ahead ensures you arrive at your wedding in outfits that are elegant, comfortable, and practical for the rain, with functional accessories, and photos that are always elegant.

3 - Lighting and Weather Conditions Management:

  • It’s normal to worry about dark, dull, or unflattering photos when it rains on your wedding day, yet this is often my favorite light for capturing your wedding photos. When it rains, the clouds soften the light and give it a gentler quality.  Of course, this requires some skill, and it’s important to master lighting in the rain. Choosing the right wedding photographer ensures that the unique atmosphere is captured and that you’ll get beautiful photos regardless of the conditions.

4 - Coordination with vendors and guests:

  • You’vecreated your rain plan, and that’s great, but there’s still one important detail to take care of: coordinating with your vendors to put your awesome plan into action. Before your wedding, don’t forget to let your vendors know about the rain plan, notify your guests of any changes, and rely on your photographer to guide you through the whole process.

5 - Maintaining a Positive and Calm Attitude:

  • While it’sperfectly normal to feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, it would be a real shame not to enjoy the moment because of the rain. Your wedding is a day dedicated to your love and your relationship, and on the big day, you shouldn’t have to think about anything else but that. The more you plan ahead and delegate on the big day, the easier it will be for you to step back and stay positive.
