Maternity photo shoots in Paris

Why have a maternity photo shoot?

A few weeks ago, one of my brides-to-be wondered about the point of maternity photo shoots, and I have to admit I had both no and 200 answers to give her. When I was pregnant with my eldest, I didn’t feel the need to capture my pregnancy. What mattered to me was the baby on the way, not the body that had carried her for nearly nine months. Funny, you might say, for a pregnancy photographer . Thenmy daughter was born, and I suddenly realized what my body had just accomplished. Luckily, I have a few photographer friends, and two of them took very different photos of this pregnancy. Thanks to them, I have some beautiful pregnancy photos.

After giving it some thought, I decided to tell my bride that women who wanted to capture their pregnancy on camera were perhaps more perceptive than I had been. That they already knew what was happening was incredibly powerful, and that it’s often important in a woman’s life to remember the strength we’re capable of! In this article, I’ll try to address the main questions I’m asked about pregnancy photos. I’ll try to explain why I love capturing the beauty and emotion of motherhood through pregnancy photo sessions. You’ll find tips on how to best prepare for your pregnancy photo sessions.

Maternity Photography: Capturing the Radiance of Pregnancy

Motherhood is beautiful; it’s often difficult; it’s sometimes cruel, but I find that pregnant women symbolize an invisible power that every woman carries within her. So obviously, when you’ve gained 15 kg in 6 months, you’re waddling like a drunken duck, and you can’t get out of bed without needing 6 people to help you, it’s hard to see the power I mentioned earlier. And yet, when I come to your home, you welcome me in, and you let yourself be captured by the click of my camera, I can assure you that I see that strength. Choosing the right photographerfor a successful means accepting that a stranger will cast her gaze upon that power, observing you to reveal both your vulnerability and your strength. It means choosing to preserve a memory of this magical time of anticipation and of your transformed body.

Why a Pregnancy Photo Shoot ?

Choosing the right maternity photographer means allowing a stranger to step into your private world to capture the beauty that surrounds you and defines your daily life. I would never claim to make you look perfect or to highlight only moments of happiness through your photos; my role is not to pretend. My work as a lifestyle photographer is to reveal, through my photos, the tenderness and joy that fill your family home. Creating an maternity photo shoot can also be helpful later on; I often receive messages from former clients who tell me they looked at their child’s birth album, saw themselves pregnant again, and realized that, in the end, they were beautiful—much more so than they felt at the time. Over time, these are the images that will remain. The story will be told through them; certain details—like the furniture you had before having a child, your once-long hair now so short (or vice versa), your partner’s ridiculous slippers—will only exist through these photos. If you ask me what a lifestyle maternity photo shoot is for: to capture intimacy and tenderness.

Preparing for the Session

Before the session, my clients usually receive a short guide on what clothes and accessories to wear for a maternity photo shoot. I think I’ll write a post about that soon. I believe the most important thing when preparing for a maternity photo shoot is to feel comfortable.

  • Don't wear clothes you've never worn before to a photo shoot

  • Don't wear clothes that aren't your style (if you usually wear sneakers, this isn't the day to try out heels—and vice versa)

  • Get your apartment ready so it looks just as good in photos as it does in your everyday life. Feel free to buy a bouquet if you like flowers, or put away those cushions Aunt Josiane gave you that you can’t stand.

  • Choose the right date for your photo shoot based on how you’re feeling: The best time for a maternity photo shoot is around the 7th month. Your belly is often already quite noticeable, but you don’t yet feel like you’re about to burst. Of course, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation, and while the seventh month is perfect for many women, it isn’t the best time for everyone. When I was seven months pregnant with my first child, my belly wasn’t big enough, and in the photos of me from that time, it looks like I’ve been eating too much cheese rather than being in the late stages of pregnancy. Similarly, you might not like your body anymore by the seventh month, so it might be better to take the photos earlier. With my second child, it was the opposite—at seven months, I felt like I was going to burst;

  • Feel free to share your ideas with your maternity photographer. Would you like to do a maternity boudoir shoot, in lingerie or topless, but are too shy to ask? Would you like to have the photos taken at a specific location? Let us know what you have in mind—we’re usually more than happy to work with your ideas.
